Burn Model System Researchers to Participate at American Burn Association Annual Meeting

A host of Burn Model System (BMS) researchers will present papers and deliver lectures to advance the field of burn injury at the American Burn Association’s 51st Annual Meeting to be held April 2-5, 2019, in Las Vegas, NV. Below is a list of participants who have submitted conference presentation information to MSKTC. Additional information about ABA participation will be added to the Promoting BMS at ABA blog post as it is received. Please feel free to use the sample language in the blog post and share on your social media accounts to help raise awareness of the accomplishments of the BMS centers, the BMS National Data and Statistical Center (BMS-NDSC), BMS/MSKTC consumer resources, and the BMS, BMS-NDSC, and MSKTC researchers’ involvement at this important event. 

Correlative Sessions and Poster Presentations



Northwest Regional Burn Model System

  • Clifford Sheckter, MD, collaborator with the Northwest Regional Burn Model System will present "Patient reported outcomes following rehabilitative surgery in burn survivors."
  • Tam Pham, MD, medical director of the University of Washington Medicine Regional Burn Center and co-investigator of the Northwest Regional Burn Model System, will present "The impact of discharge contracture on rates of return to work after burn injury."
  • Shelley Wiechman, PhD, University of Washington Medicine Regional Burn Center attending psychologist and past Northwest Regional Burn Model System investigator, will present a poster, "A randomized controlled trial of hypnosis for pain and itch following burn injury."
  • Stuart Miyasako, BS, 4th year medical student at the University of Washington School of Medicine will present the poster, "Contact burns: A retrospective analysis of etiology and demographics."
Boston Harvard Burn Injury Model System
  • Jeffrey Schneider, MD, program director of the Boston-Harvard Burn Injury Model System, will present "Post-acute care setting is associated with employment after severe burn injury."
  •  Audrey Wolfe, MS, program manager of the Boston-Harvard Burn Injury Model System, will present "Association of head and neck burns with long-term patient-reported dissatisfaction with appearance: A Burn Model System National Database study."
  • Keri Brady, PhD, clinical research associate at the Boston-Harvard Burn Injury Model System collaborating site Shriner’s Hospitals For Children – Boston, will present "Measuring the impact of burns on the health outcomes of young children: A conceptual framework for the development of the Preschool Life Impact Burn Recovery Evaluation (Preschool LIBRE) CAT."  
  • Gabby Grant, research coordinator at the Boston-Harvard Burn Injury Model System collaborating site Shriner’s Hospitals for Children – Boston, will present "CAGE substance use scores and trajectories over time following burn injury: A Burn Model System National Database study."

 Boston-Harvard Burn Injury Model System researchers will also present the following posters:
  • "Evaluation of patient-reported outcomes before and after burn reconstruction"
  • "Developing LIBRE Profile levels: Providing clinical meaning for scores"
  • "No association of oxandrolone administration and the development or severity of heterotopic ossification following burn injury"
  • "Effects of transcranial direct current stimulation on pain and itch after burn injury"
  • "Examining the cross-cultural validity of the Spanish Young Adult Burn Outcome Questionnaire"

Sunrise Symposiums

Gretchen Carrougher, RN, MN, project coordinator at the Northwest Regional Burn Model System and Xinsheng "Cindy" Cai, PhD, project director of the Model Systems Knowledge Translation Center will facilitate a Sunrise Symposia discussion on "Knowledge translation: Writing education materials that patients and families can understand" on Wednesday, April 3, 2019, 6:30-7:45AM.

Jeffrey Schneider, MD, program director of  the Boston-Harvard Burn Injury Model System and Colleen Ryan, MD,  director of clinical care at the Boston-Harvard Burn Injury Model System, will facilitate a Sunrise Symposia discussion on "Advances in measuring social participation outcomes: LIBRE and beyond"on Thursday, April 4, 2019, from 6:30-7:45AM.


Educational Forum
BMS investigators will provide an educational seminar on Thursday, April 4, 2019, (2:00-4:00PM) titled, "Funding your burn research with NIDILRR." We invite all interested researchers to this forum where BMS and NDSC investigators will discuss specifics on how to apply for future NIDILRR funding support of your rehabilitation research.
